Painting Bag; A Vessel for Creative Order

The tools lotos never goes anywhere without (and honestly, sometimes even with them, she gets nowhere)

When I open my painting bag, the first thing you notice is order. Not a rigid, military order, but an order born from experience. Brushes are arranged by size and bristle type. Colors are organized by hue. Pencils are sharpened. The eraser is in its place. This bag is a mirror of my mind.

Years ago, in one of my painting workshops, my teacher said: “Know your tools before you pick up a brush.” I took that seriously. Every artist has a unique relationship with their tools. Researchers in the psychology of art believe that physical order in tools can contribute to mental order and reduce creative anxiety. When brushes are organized, my mind works more clearly. This is a conscious choice, not an obsessive compulsion.

What is inside my bag? Natural-hair watercolor brushes in three main sizes. Flat brushes for acrylics. A metal palette knife for special textures. Professional watercolor paints with high-quality pigments. Graphite pencils in various grades. Specialty erasers. And most importantly, a small notebook for sudden ideas. None of these were chosen randomly. Each one found its place in the bag after months of trial and error.

The practical result of this order? When I go to a gallery or work at home, I know exactly where everything is. No searching. No energy wasted on finding tools. That means more time for creating.

Of course, I admit: sometimes when I am in a hurry, I do not put the brushes back in their exact spots. And then, in the middle of the night, when I want to paint, I cannot find that particular brush and have to work with another one. The result? A painting that looks nothing like what I had in mind. But honestly, sometimes those unplanned paintings turn out more interesting than the calculated ones. Maybe order is not always the best answer; but I am still in love with the order of my painting bag.
